Raku  Class (3-Week + additional firing Saturday)

Raku Class

Raku is the special technique of creating pottery with open flame.
The first two class sessions we will be creating pieces in the studio (sharing best practices techniques for raku, etc.). Before the third class, all pieces will be bisque fired. During the third class we will be discussing finishing techniques, including masking, various glazes/combinations, naked raku appications, and more.

On firing day, we will be placing pottery in an outdoor kiln, removing the pieces when they are molten hot, and place them in a tin can that contains combustible materials. The pots will ignite the materials in the can. Since fire needs oxygen in order to burn, the flames pull oxygen out of the glazes and leave a wonderful ephemeral mix of colors and metallics.

We will be using a variety of raku glazes including housemade crackle and matte glazes.

This class includes three create classes, and a firing day on Saturday. You will be able to fire up to 850 cubic inches (about the size of a Standard clay box). Please – no pieces bigger than 10″ x 6″ x 6″.

Classes meet once a week for 3 weeks, with an additional Saturday date for firing.
