Pottery Lane is excited to welcome Mayco’s Todd Hickerson for an unforgettable weekend dedicated to glazes, atmospheric firing, experimentation, and—of course—FIRE!

Light It Up Weekend is your opportunity to get beyond the electric kiln and experience how different firing methods can completely transform ceramic surfaces.

Throughout the weekend, Todd will share his knowledge of Mayco glazes, glaze application, firing temperatures, atmospheric effects, and how glazes respond when we introduce variables like flame, ash, soda, reduction, smoke, and high heat.

Whether you’re an experienced potter ready to experiment with Cone 10 atmospheric firing or you’re simply curious about what happens when pottery meets fire, there’s something for you this weekend.

Todd Hickerson | Mayco Color Corporation

Todd brings extensive experience with Mayco’s Stoneware glaze line and ceramic firing techniques, from Cone 6 oxidation through Cone 10 and atmospheric firing.

Throughout Light It Up Weekend, Todd will share techniques, glaze knowledge, firing insights, and practical information you can take back to your own studio practice.

And this isn’t just a demonstration weekend.

You’ll glaze. You’ll experiment. You’ll fire. You’ll learn.

Most importantly, you’ll get the opportunity to see how the same fundamental materials can produce dramatically different results depending on how they’re fired.

CONE 10 SODA FIRING EXPERIENCE — $35

Bring 2–3 of your own Cone 10 pots and experience the beautiful unpredictability of soda firing. Learn how sodium introduced into a hot kiln travels with the flame and interacts with clay and glaze to create flashing, movement, texture, and one-of-a-kind surfaces.

CONE 10 WOOD FIRING EXPERIENCE — $35

Bring 2–3 of your own Cone 10 pots and discover what happens when flame and ash become part of the glaze. Explore how Mayco glazes respond to a Cone 10 wood-firing atmosphere and see how kiln placement, flame path, ash, reduction, and heat help determine the finished surface.

HALLOWEEN RAKU FIRING — $35

Fire up Halloween—literally!

Participants will glaze and fire a ceramic skull and pumpkin using the dramatic Raku process. Watch as red-hot pottery comes out of the kiln and heads into reduction, where fire, smoke, glaze, and oxygen create spectacular and unpredictable results.

Your skull and pumpkin are included, so you don’t need to bring your own pottery.

MAYCO CONE 6 FIRING WORKSHOP — $35

Get hands-on with Mayco!

Todd will lead participants through three different projects while exploring Mayco glaze combinations, layering, application techniques, surface effects, and the possibilities of Cone 6 firing.

This is your chance to experiment, ask questions, learn directly from Mayco, and discover new ways to get more from your glazes.
